Top 100 Ways You Know You Live In NEPA No.100

This morning I'll be starting a new series inspired by my husband and his astute, 7 a.m. observations of Northern Pennsylvanian life. (I will try to avoid all references to The Office as long as I possibly can, but no promises.)

Can we begin the countdown, please? The 100th Most Way You Know You Live in NEPA is...

...it's June and they're still cold-patching!

...

I know, I know. This is probably funny only to me and my father. Let me explain.

/constructionnerd. Cold patching is the way your DOT patches potholes in the winter after the hot asphalt plants are closed. It damages your car only slightly less than the actual hole, is never tamped down correctly, and lasts about 2.3 days before someone rips it up again. It is a short-term fix until the plants open again in the spring and should never be considered the final word in pothole repair. Fortunately for our town budget, PENNDOT seems to view cold-patching as an alternative to repaving. Unfortunately for our Mazda, this laissez faire attitude to road maintenance sounds a chronic death toll to our front struts. /endconstructionnerd)
